Unbalanced optical phenomena based on quantum dots, quantum wells and semiconductor lasers — this is the area of the lectures by Professor of the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University Dmitry Firsov, who is a guest lecturer of the “Quanta” Master’s Degree Program in Quantum and Mesoscopic Physics of the “My Step” Charitable Foundation and has been delivering lectures as part of the Program for the past two years already.
“I give lectures on the topic “Interactions of Optical Radiation with Conductors”, which is not well studied, and this makes the learning process more interesting. Working with the students is also very interesting. In reality, they have a lot of knowledge, but they have a lot to learn through the topic of my lectures, and this is what we are trying to do during this period,” the guest lecturer notes.
Professor Firsov recalls that he had a lot of concerns when he was first coming to deliver lectures for the students of the “Quanta” Master’s Degree Program and would ask himself how the lectures would go and how the students would view them. He is content with the outcome of the work with the students of the previous year. During this second visit, the courses are more refined, and Dmitry Firsov admitted that the professors also gain experience through such programs.
The “Quanta” Master’s Degree Program is a magnificent project. There is nothing like this in Russia. Programs are usually developed and then supervised by universities and the ministry, but in this case, a number of wonderful professors from different countries have gathered and have drafted this program, which is devoted to a very current topic, that is, quantum physics,” the Professor says.
The guest lecturer predicts that some of the students will certainly continue their careers in science. “This Program and this option for study is fundamental; it is a real university training, and the fundamentality of it is that it makes the Program truly valuable,” Professor Firsov emphasizes.
